Retired Marine Corps Colonel Marcel J. "Mac" Dube salutes Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center commanding general Brig. Gen. H. Stacy Clardy III on base Friday morning, August 20, 2010, after being pinned with the Silver Star earned for combat actions during his service in the Republic of Vietnam. On March 20, 1967, Dube led a squad of South Vietnamese Marines on a mission to rescue downed Air Force pilot Capt. Phil Jones who was shot down over the Bhinh Dhin Province while spotting enemy targets. Dube and his team recovered the pilot, who attended Friday's ceremony, as well as six rocket pods from the aircraft which were considered armed and dangerous. Dube retired from the Marine Corps in 1989 after serving as Chief of Staff of combat center; he went on to serve eight years on the city council and three years as Mayor of Twentynine Palms. Friday's ceremony was held in conjunction with the base's 58th birthday celebration.
