2011 REVIEW
We had a busy year and managed to exceed our expectations with fund raising. Several things made the Chapter successful.  First of all, we organized the Tun Tavern Team and asked members to make at least a $100 donation.  Secondly, we had the good fortune of having the beer donated for the OKTOBERFEST at the Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade and for the 1/7 Warrior Appreciation Steak Barbecue in October. Member Doc Gillette made this possible through an anonymous donor friend of his.

Thirdly, Don Tully, who passed away, had his family establish a memorial fund set so family and friends could make a donation to the chapter in lieu of flowers.  And fourth, we held a year end fund raiser with Jensen’s Markets to raise money to purchase Christmas Turkey Dinners for the families of deployed Marines at 29 Palms. This alone exceeded our other fund raisers and set the stage for doing it again in 2012.

This enabled us to touch the lives of 260 families of Marines & Corpsmen over the Christmas Holidays. We donated Christmas Dinners to 140 Marine families of the 3rd Battalion  / 7th Marines,, 1st Tank Battalion, Wounded Warriors Battalion and the Armed Services YMCA at the Combat Center.  We also donated 120 fifty dollar Visa gift cards to the 7th Marine Regiment who distributed them to young enlisted families of their four battalions.

We were able to make another  donation to the Desert Hot Springs High School Marine JROTC program to increase our support for them.

Last June we collected donations of socks and baby wipes for Marines of the 3 / 4 in Afghanistan and did a great job.  We shipped over 3,000 lbs of donations which is one helluva lot of socks and baby wipes.

Thank you to everyone of you that helped make our fund raising so successful in 2011. It was your  support that made the year a success!

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MARINE CORPS              By  Buddy Sklar
It has been an exciting and rewarding year at the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. LtGen Ron Christmas, USMC (Ret.) retired.  His vision and determination brought The Museum to the finest American History Museum in the world.  LtGen Rusty Blackman USMC (Ret.) has taken over the helm and it has been a smooth change of command.

LtGen Blackman was commissioned into the USMC from Cornell University in 1970.  He served 37 years of active service including being President of the Marine Corps University, Commanding General 2nd Marine Division, Commanding General III Marine Expeditionary Force
and Marine Corps Forces Command.

We read and heard about the idiot who shot at the Museum breaking some glass.  The rest of the story is that the repairs cost approximately $400,000 which was insured.  They did catch the shooter who was a reserved Marine upset that we were in the Middle East. Security now is like no other.

For those that have visited the Museum, there is a lot more on the way. A  4 Star Hotel will be built on the Museum grounds so that people can spend several days going through all of the exhibits. Also, for basic class reunions.
As chairman of Development and Planned Giving, here are our priorities included in the financial goal of $63 Million:

Large Screen (I Max) Theatre                    Mechanical Room
Class Rooms  & Restrooms                         Activity Area
Remainder of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park
Galleries honoring our heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan

If you haven’t visited the museum or haven’t been there in the past two years, please do and see some remarkable additions.

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation supports The Presidents Own Band, Marine Corps University, National Museum of the Marine Corps, we fund the teacher in residence program at the Museum.  More than 46,000 children have toured the Museum and instructed by our teacher in residence.

Goals & Objectives for 2012:
-Creation of a program to assist visually and hearing impaired tours.
-Recruit and train at least 40 docents per year over the next 3 years.
-Design, fabricate and open a temporary exhibit related to the 20th anniversary of Desert Shield / Desert Storm.
-Develop a partnership with the Boy / Girl Scouts at the National level.
-Offer summer camp for grades K-5.
-Support Wounded Warriors and family members.

Please contact me if I can be of any assistance on your trip to the Museum.
