DESERT CITIES MPMOH CHAPTER ANNIVERSARY

The Chapter will celebrate our fourteenth anniversary on August 9th.  We will celebrate with a cake at the August 15th meeting.

AUGUST 15TH MEETING

Col Mike Walker will be the Speaker and will update us on what is happening with threats to the USA  around the world.  Mike recently was awarded a Masters Degree in Military History which adds to his impressive background.

Please make your luncheon reservation at (760) 901-5494.

KOREA & VIETNAM MARINES

The DESERT SUN Newspaper has done an excellent job with telling the stories of hundreds of WW II veterans. Now they want to focus on veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

If you served in either war, please contact Denise Goolsby, DESERT SUN, at (760) 861-1697.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL MARINE JROTC

MSgt Benoit resigned as the Instructor to take another position closer to his home in Rialto.

LtCol Carl Lewke has announced that 1st Sergeant Nichelle Webb, USMC (Ret.) has been appointed the Instructor.  She has moved here from Shiprock, NM.  She is a college graduate, served as a DI at MCRD, Parris Island and completed a tour in Afghanistan before her retirement two years ago.

BIG BEAR RECREATIONAL FACILITY

The Big Bear Recreational Facility is home to 8 cabins which can sleep a total of six people in each.  There are also 5 RV Campsites and 5 tent campsites which can host a total of 8 people at each.

This facility is available to active and retired Marines or Corpsmen. Contact them for more information and reservations (909) 866-3965.

SEMPER FI  MERLOT WINE

Happy to advise that it is in stock at the Jensen’s Palm Desert Store.  Price is $8.99 a bottle.  Case discount available.

It makes a great gift or an addition to your wine rack that will become a conversational piece.

SGTMAJOR RAY WILBURN

Most of us already know that the SgtMajor is one tough  Marine.  But, the latest chapter to his toughness happened in April.  Ray was knocked down during a severe wind storm and suffered a broken hip.
So, rather than fix it he had a new hip installed and expects it to give him 25 years of service.  The SgtMajor turned 94 on July 1st.

7TH MARINES LIAISION

Mike Walker has taken over the responsibility of maintaining liaison with the 7th Marine Regiment including the 1/7, 2/7, 3/7, ¾ and other units attached to them at 29 Palms.

He will be working on setting up the next Warrior Appreciation Steak Barbecue with one of the battalions sometime in October.  We will advise when this has been finalized.

Walker has also become the contact for the Wounded Warriors Detachment, 29 Palms.  We are working on a date for the next outing with them sometime in September.

PALM DESERT GOLF CART PARADE

The date is Sunday, October 27th.   Theme this year will be FUN IN THE SUN.   We will have the 1 / 7 Color Guard, 29 Palms, leading off the parade.

Our WW II Marines will be spotlighted in an 8 passenger golf cart.  The Marine Band will not be with us this year due to the Defense Department sequestration budget cuts. The good news is that the Palm Springs Pipe Band will march with us and play the classic Marine Corps Marching Music.

MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY BALL, LAS VEGAS

The 7th Marine Regimental Headquarters Command will celebrate the 238th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps on Thursday, November 14th at Bally’s Hotel, Las Vegas. Our Chapter has been invited to join the celebration.  Tickets to the Ball are $65 per person.  This is a formal event so our wives can dress up.

Hotel reservations should be made directly with Bally’s.  There will be a special room rate for attending the Ball.   If you are interested in supporting, please let us know.  Money will be due sometime in early November.

EIGHTH ANNUAL 7TH MARINES WARRIOR APPRECIATION STEAK BBQ

We are working on scheduling this steak barbecue in October.  We will be hosting 100 Marines from the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines. We will work out the date and location with LtCol Yost and SgtMaj Getty and include details in the September newsletter.

CONGRESSMAN INVITED TO SPEAK

We have been contacted by our local Congressman to arrange for him to attend a chapter meeting.  Raul Ruiz, who is on the Veterans Administration Committee, will confirm his availability to attend the October meeting.  He will talk about what is going on at the V.A.

ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE

Gary Jeandron, Candidate for the 42nd State Assembly Republican nomination, will attend our August 15th meeting to invite our members to one of his fund raisers.
