AUGUST 16TH MEETING
Major Ross Schellhass, Commanding Officer, Infantry Unit Leadership School, Camp Pendleton will return as our guest speaker.  A group of us attended the March 21st Infantry Unit Leaders Graduation where the top graduate was presented the Mitchell Paige MOH Trophy.   Schellhass hosted us for lunch.

1ST MARINE DIVISION ASSOCIATION NATIONAL REUNION
A good turnout is expected in Portland for the 2012 Reunion at the Marriott Hotel on August 13 - 16th.  Gene McClendon will represent the Chapter and present a report on our activities for the past year.  If you are interested in going please call (760) 967-8561 for more information and registration.

WOUNDED WARRIORS GOLF & BARBECUE
Plan to join us on Friday, September 7th at Santa Rosa Golf Club, Palm Desert for 18 holes of golf and a tri tip barbecue at noon.  Marines from the Wounded Warrior Detachment, 29 Palms have been invited to be our guests.

Golfer’s will tee off at a shotgun start at 0730.  They are expected back at the club house by 1130 for the barbecue lunch afterwards. For the non golfers there will be a putting contest and use of the driving range.

The Santa Rosa Golf Club is rolling out the red carpet for the Marines and us.  Let’s show our appreciation and support.  Bring a guest for golf or for the barbecue.   Invitations will be sent out in two weeks.

SEPTEMBER 20TH MEETING
The command of the 1st Tank Battalion has been invited as our guests.  They are currently in the process of returning from deployment to Afghanistan.

Last Christmas, “1st Tanks” were one of the units that we provided Christmas Turkey Dinners for their families.

Let’s plan on showing them our support on September 20th.

PALM DESERT GOLF CART PARADE, Sunday, October 28th.
We are working on bringing the Marine Band up from Camp Pendleton along with a Color Guard.  We had the band at the 2010 Parade and they really made the parade a success.

Once again, we will drive an 8 passenger golf cart for our World War II Marines to ride and high lighted. The rest of us will escort the cart along the ¾ mile route on El Paseo. Dick Partee will once again drive, assuming he passes the drivers test.

The Chapter will have a 10’ x 10’ Tented Space set up to promote the 2012 Jensen’s Fund Raiser for Christmas Dinners for deployed Marines. We also will be there to recruit new members and create community awareness over who we are.

Since there won’t be a Beer Garden  at the parade this year, Karen and I are planning to once again invite everyone over to our home after the parade.

MAILING LIST INPUT
Bob Shepard has asked for your help in building our master mailing list.  Please send us 5 - 10 names of people who you know that would be interested in supporting our social events and helping to support the Wounded Warriors.

Each member that participates will receive be eligible to participate in a special drawing for a watch.

JARHEAD RED WINE
Both Jensen’s Stores in Palm Desert and Palm Springs are now stocking this nectar of the Marine Corps.  The Chapter has been giving a bottle to our monthly speakers.  From what I am told, most keep JARHEAD RED  as a souvenir.

Price is $14.99 less 10% discount when purchasing 6 bottles. It’s a great gift when you are going to dinner at friends. This wine come from the Firestone Winery and their Marine family.

CHRISTMAS FUND RAISER
Bob Shepard and I met with the owner of Jensen’s Fine Food Markets and have agreed  to doing another fund raiser for Christmas Dinners for Deployed Marine Families at 29 Palms.

Our goal for Christmas 2012 is to raise $20,000 for Christmas Turkey Dinners for enlisted  families of Marines deployed to Afghanistan.

Last year, we had great competition among the volunteers who collected donations. This year, we will keep score on who raises the most money and award the winning team a case of JARHEAD RED WINE, courtesy of Jensen’s Markets.

We will ask volunteers to sign up at the October 18th meeting.  There will be two 3 hour shifts, 1100 -1400 and 1400 -zzzzz 1700, at the Palm Springs and Palm Desert stores.  The other smaller 5 stores will solicit donations through an in store promotional program at the cashier stands.

Jensen’s will also give us more promotional support in 2012 through their advertising and publicity campaign.
