HAPPY 237TH BIRTHDAY MARINES

PALM DESERT GOLF CART PARADE
Last reminder, Sunday, October 28th.  We will start gathering around noon and need to be there to welcome the 1st Marine Division Band and the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines Color Guard due to arrive by 1215 - 1230.  We will meet on the east end of the parade route, at San Luis Rey and El Paseo where our
8 passenger golf cart will be parked.  The cart will have our World War II Marines:  Les Carlisle, Sam Huttenhower, Dorothee Irwin, George Schenkman, SgtMaj Ray Schum,  SgtMaj Ray Wilburn and Bill Zagone on board.  Marilyn Paige will ride up front with Col Dick Partee driving.  The Colonel did receive his drivers license again after passing the drivers test for the seventh time. The rest of us will walk the ¾ mile route. We will lead off the parade again, behind the color guard and band. Be prepared for another overwhelming welcome from the 15 - 20,000 spectators along El Paseo.

We also will have our MARINES pop up tent set up at the vendors area, at
Larkspur and El Paseo collecting donations for the Jensen’s Christmas Dinner Fund Raiser.  Pete Van Vechten and Bob Shepard have volunteered to man it from 11 - 3.

All members and spouses are invited to drop by Karen & Jim Sullivan’s afterwards.  (73-315 Haystack Rd, PD - ). Bring something to drink and snack on as we gather to share stories about the Golf Cart Parade.

NOVEMBER 15TH MEETING
Dale Turner, Past President and Adjutant of the Los Angeles County Chapter and also a Life Member of the Desert Cities Chapter will drive in from Newhall to be our speaker.  Dale has been active in the national FMDA and is motivator.

We have invited Matt Zack, Vice President of Jensen’s Fine Foods Markets to join us at this meeting so we can introduce the man behind  Jensen’s.  Meeting starts at 1130 at Desert Falls C.C.

Bring unwrapped toys for a boy and a girl.  They will be donated to the Armed Services YMCA at the Combat Center, 29 Palms. They will distribute the toys to young enlisted Marine families there.  This may seem a little early, but our December meeting falls on December 20th which will be too late to collect and deliver in time for Christmas.

We started this toy donation two years ago when we learned that the families at 29 Palms were not benefiting from the Toys for Tots program.  In other words, toys donated to T 4 T are not distributed to our Marine families at 29 Palms. Last year, there were 700 families that applied for toys at the  ASYMCA. So, we support their need by doing what we can do to support our Marine families.  Last year, we were able to collect and deliver 3 SUV’s full of donated toys thanks to our chapter members.

ANNUAL WARRIOR APPRECIATION STEAK BBQ
We had 170 members, guests and Marines there on October 13th.  We had five members step forward and make  donations over $100 each to help cover the cost of the Marines. thanks to Mac Dube, Dave Franklin, Charlie Garbarini, Dan Silvers and Michael Walker for their generosity.  Another seven guests  made donations over $100 each to help with the costs including a $250 donation from Dr. Andrew Rothstein, a friend of the chapter and a $200 donation from a friend of Bill Zagone.

Doc Gillette, once again, arranged for the beverage donation which helped us control the costs.  Thanks again,
Doc!
