MAY 16TH MEETING
Definitely a change of pace with speakers.  Rich (Da Coach) Gilgallon will join us and be the guest of honor.  His talk show is on Mon - Fri on 920 AM.  He is a conservative talk show host.  Luncheon will be at 1130.  Cost is $20 inclusive.  Reservations are required.

MAY 17TH LIVING HISTORY DAY, NOLE INDIAN SCHOOL
We have been invited back to support this day at this patriotic Indian School.  Les Carlyle will provide WW II, Quint Villanueva the Korean War, Henry Sanchez - Vietnam and Mike Walker, the Gulf War.

MAY 23RD WOUNDED WARRIORS BARBECUE
We will host Marines and their spouses for a barbecue lunch on Thursday, 1130 May 23rd at Luckie Park, Two Mile Rd & Utah in 29 Palms.  This park is located in town.  We will barbecue our usual NY Choice Steaks and have side dishes and soft drinks.

Tickets are $20.  If you can’t be there, please make a donation to help with the costs for these special Marines and their spouses.  Reservations are necessary since we will have to purchase the steaks in advance.  Call 760 901-5494.

We will need volunteers to help with barbecuing the steaks.  Volunteer chefs  need to be proficient in grilling skills,  Let us know if you want to help and be sure to bring a spatula.

JENSEN’S EASTER FUND RAISER
We were invited to use Jensen’s last busy weekend of the season to collect donations for the Wounded Warriors at 29 Palms.  It went very well thanks to the following volunteers who made it happen:

            BOB FERGUSON                 DICK PARTEE
            DEAN HUNTER                   BILL ROSS
JIM LARSH / 2 shifts         BOB SHEPARD
            GENE MCCLENDON            GEORGE STETTLER
JIM OLSON / 2 shifts         JIM SULLILVAN

Hunter did a great job when he told a couple, who had supported the Wounded Warriors national charity, what we are going for the WW.  They decided to give their $100 monthly pledge to us and sent us their first check.

Those of us who worked the Palm Springs store had the opportunity to get a view of the annual side show called the White Party.  It was a HOOT.

Thanks again, Matt Zack for giving us the opportunity.  LtCol Wright, Commanding Officer, Wounded Warriors, was informed of the event and expressed his appreciation.

TWO NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Bruno Takacs and Mike Walker were recently elected to the Board of Directors.  At the April board meeting, the board also elected Bruno Takacs to office as Sgt At Arms.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
LtCol Richard Belgum, USMC (Ret.) of Thousand Palms and Carson City has joined the chapter as a regular member.  He served with the 3rd BN 4th Marines and the 1st BN 1st Marines with the 1st Mardiv.  Richard and his wife Lynn live in Thousand Palms during the season and summer in Carson City.

Don Foley has also joined the chapter. Don served 1952 -1956 with the Marine Air Wing  He lives in La Quinta with his wife Vikki.  He was recruited by Carl Brooks.

LTCOL TED WONG
He relinquished command of the Wounded Warriors last December to LtCol Donald Wright.  Wong  has advised us that he has been assigned the Marine Reserve Liaison Officer and will be headquartered in New Orleans.

LUNCHEON TO HONOR WOMEN MARINES
This event was another success and we owe a lot of people thanks for what they did to make it one.  Brooke Beare was the Emcee and did a super job of running the program.  Major Heather Cotoia came up from 1st Marine Division Headquarters, Camp Pendleton to be the Guest of Honor and showed off her professionalism as a Marine Officer.   Rev. Melanie Sanchez handled the Invocation and Benediction.  Marilyn Paige provided the recitation on the Fallen Warrior table.  Bruce Topp, Palm Springs Pipe Band, provided the music. Mike Walker  arranged for a charter bus for transporting the women Marines at no cost to our chapter. This really helped us.

Many members and friends donated for the raffle and the silent auction.  Harry Covert organized the silent auction and had Louise Stettler there to help run it.  De Luca Jewelers donated two beautiful jewelry items, Marilyn Paige a woman’s watch, Bill & Donna Zagone a hand painted Hawaiian  necklace,  Dean Hunter a sterling silver coffee service, Carl Brooks, Bob Shepard, Jim Olson, Bob Belz and Dick Partee, Buddy Sklar rounds of golf at local country clubs.

We had a record amount of donations for the raffle. Gift certificates to local restaurants including Trilusa, Daily Grill, Kaiser, Villagio, I W Club, Pacifica, Ruth Chris, Los Pepes, Don Diego’s, Wolf Gang Pucks thanks to George & Louise Stettler, Henry Sanchez, Joe Sanders, Dick Partee, Jim Sullivan & Bruno Takacs.  Visa Gift cards, Trader Joe’s, Macy’s Gift Cards were also donated.  Matt Zack donated Jensen’s gift cards and wine.  A special raffle for the women Marines included two passes to the Stage Coach Music Festival thanks to Charlie & Linda Garbarini. Target Gift Cards and a  pass on the Palm Springs Tram.  Thanks to Gene & Barbara McClendon for doing a great job in promoting raffle tickets and encouraging members and guest to donate some to the women Marines.  One woman Marine won several prizes,  had a huge smile on her face.  Marine Sgt. Carlos Trejo, from the Wounded Warrior Detachment, won the M-1 Tribute plaque which was donated by Bill Ross.  He also had a big smile,

Gene & Barbera McClendon did a terrific job selling the raffle tickets and encouraging our members to donate tickets to the women Marines.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL MARINE JROTC
On April 24th we presented Cadet Rigoberto Arce the Semper Fi
Award, as the outstanding cadet graduating. He has enlisted into the Marine Corps along with 6 graduating cadets and will report to MCRD in July.  Congratulations to LtCol Carl Lewke, who heads up the program, for producing 7 Marine recruits in 2013.

SEMPER FI WINE
Jensen’s Market, Palm Desert is now stocking SEMPER FI Merlot Wine.  They already stock JARHEAD RED.  So, please shop there for your wine needs.

Great conversation piece, is either brand and what a great gift idea!  We encourage members to support Jensen’s for carrying these wine products and their support of our fund raising at Christmas and last Easter.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE
Reminder that there will be services at the various veteran Memorial Cemeteries in the Coachella Valley.  We need to support each of them by simply showing up as members of the Desert Cities Chapter, 1st Marine Division Association.
Our white chapter shirts and red covers give us good recognition.  Services are usually in the morning to make it convenient for everyone.
