AUGUST 21ST MEETING
LtCol Matt Good, USMC, Comanding Officer, 3rd LAR, will be the Guest of Honor / Speaker.  He will provide us an update on their purpose and mission.

COL MIKE WALKER
Fellow Marine Mike Walker will soon leave us for the high country near Boise, ID.  He is building a new home there and plans to relocate once his current home in 29 Palms is sold.

Mike has become a legend in the Coachella Valley for his expertise on world affairs.  Besides speaking at a number of our chapter events, he has also spoke to the Lincoln Club, Rotary Clubs, Navy League and other organizations. Last May he spoke at the Indian Ridge Home Owners Association and raised $3700 for the chapter.

We will bid Mike farewell at the July 17th meeting.

NEW COMMANDANT NOMINATED
The DOD has nominated General Joseph Dunford as the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps.  Dunford has been the CO of the coalition forces in Afghanistan.

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING THE 1/7
When we learned of the 1st Battalions needs in Afghanistan -  George Stettler, Dick Partee, Quint Villanueva and Mike Walker went to work on soliciting donations of baby wipes, shampoo and other personal hygiene products to the 629 Marines and sailors there.  (They are one company short since a last minute decision sent that company to Yeman).

Stettler  enlisted support from his wife Louise who did an outstanding job in spreading the word, stimulating interest and support. The two of them  reached out to friends and business contacts  for support and brought in an incredible amount of donations of baby products to support the Marines operating in primitive outposts.  Their super effort created another problem, money to ship everything overseas.

We also reached out to other organizations for their financial support since shipping into a war zone is limited to the U S Postal Service and relatively expensive.   Members Dick Partee, Henry Monahan, Bill Zagone, Marilyn Paige, Joe Daily, Wes Ahlgren, George Stettler, Bob Shepard and Joe Sanders donated $1730 for shipping costs.   The Marine Corps League donated another $500 for a total of $2130 which covered most of the shipping expenses.

COL M. J. DUBE, RIP
A Funeral  Mass was held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Chapel, MCAGCC, on June 13th for our old friend Mac Dube.   Big turn out of old friends and family.  We had 8 members from the Chapter attend the service,  This  was greatly appreciated by Patti Dube, their twin sons Erik and Marc  and their families.

We last saw their families when Mac was belatedly awarded the Silver Star in August, 2010

RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS
We need to continue to recruit Marines and FMF Corpsmen to join our organization and enjoy the camaraderie that we enjoy at our monthly meetings.

We have a post card size flyer that provides an attention getting message and an invitation to attend one of our luncheons.  It does work but has to get into the prospects hands.  Contact Bruno or myself if you need some.

PATRIOT RIDE FOR HEROES
We participated in the first one held in La Quinta last October.  We collected approximately $1600 which was money for the Christmas Turkey Dinners.

This year it will be October 24 & 25th.  We will need your help to work a 3 hour shift.  Mark your calendar as a volunteer to help!   This event will be the Friday and Saturday before our annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade on Sunday, October 26th.

FUND RAISING
Harry Ziegler found a local golf club looking for non profits to grant money to to support them.  He took the lead on submitting our application which is being done now.  We will let you know how this turns out at the July meeting.

So, keep the chapter in mind when you see or hear about fund raising opportunities.

                    HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY
