AUGUST 4TH
Plan to join fellow members at Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio between 0500 - 0700 to send off Marines from 29 Palms and Tim Esser on his bicycle ride across country to the World Trade Center.  Esser will provide a breakfast buffet for us.  I asked Tim what would be the best time to be there?  “0600” was his response.

There will be police and fire there along with military veterans to support his carrying a special American flag across country.  Esser and his two daughters will travel the entire way, which is an approximate 6 week trip.  They have a RV as their escort vehicle.

Hope to see you there!

AUGUST 21ST MEETING
LtCol Matthew Good, USMC, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Light Armored Recon will be our guest of honor / speaker. This will be the time that we have had the 3rd LAR joining us.  It will be interesting to hear about their operations and mission.  Please make your reservation and plan to join us.

We will also have the pleasure of having Rob Heggie join us for lunch.  Rob heads up the Palm Springs Pipe Band who will be joining us on October 26th for the 50th Anniversary of the Palm Desert Goilf Cart Parade.

NEW MEMBERS
William Howard Lehman has joined the chapter.  Howard served 1952 - 1955. He served with the 1st Infantry Training Regiment, Camp Pendleton as his last duty station.

Howard played football for Loyola University, Southern Mississippi, MCRD, San Diego and the New York Giants.  Howard is a retired business executive and lives with his wife Carol in Cathedral City.
Bob Shepard recruited Howard to join the chapter.

Dr. Jon Schiff, Rancho Mirage has also joined the chapter.  Schiff has an unusual military background since he has served in the Navy, Air Force and Army as a Dental Officer.  He retired from the Army as a Colonel.

His Navy career included a tour in Vietnam where Schiff was awarded the Bronze Star while attached to the 3rd Marine Division. Schiff was recruited by Harry Ziegler.

7TH MARINE REGIMENT
For the past 8 years we have worked on developing a working relationship with the regimental command.  This has been a challenge since we have to deal with changes in command every few years.  We started with Col McCoy, then LtCol Hubbard, then Col Newman, Col
Renforth and now Col Bargeron.

The current Commanding Officer, Col Jay Bargeron wants us to partner with the regiment and start the process of building a relationship with the local community. Earlier this week, we met with him, his XO and SgtMaj and started the process. First step will be to meet with the City of Palm Desert and explore the City adopting the regiment. We will keep you posted on the process.

AMERICAN AND MARINE CORPS FLAG DONATION
Dave Franklin has donated a set of these flags including poles and stands to the Chapter.  Franklin has always been generous to the Chapter and will soon be leaving us to relocate to Hawaii. He said he will come to meetings whenever back on the mainland.

This will give us two sets of flags to use when we start our next Jensen’s Christmas fund raiser in November.  We were borrowing a set from Bob Shepard which cost a lot of beers to rent them.

COL MIKE WALKER DEPARTS
We lost one of our most respected Marines, Mike Walker.  Mike is moving to Meridian, ID where he has a new home being built. Mike has family there including grand children who he wanted to be closer to.

We plan to have Mike down here early next year to do some  more presentations for local homeower associations.

DRESS CODE FOR MEETINGS
Some members are getting lax in wearing appropriate clothes to our meetings.  The Classic Club requests guests wear collared shirts. (Tee shirts are not appropriate).  Your board of directors are wearing traditional blue blazers to show respect for our guests who are wearing suits or dress uniforms. We would appreciate your cooperation by wearing chapter shirts and blazer if you can at future meetings.

JOE DELUCA R.I.P.
Joe Deluca, DeLuca Jeweler’s on El Paseo has supported the Chapter’s fund raising efforts by donating ladies jewelry.  The jewelry was sold at silent auctions raising thousands of dollars for the chapter. We honored his generosity by presenting his with a special plaque earlier this year. Joe was 92 years old.

A memorial service will be held on August 9th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert. The Chapter has made a donation in lieu of flowers.

MORE SUPPORT FOR THE 1/7 SHIPMENT LAST MONTH
We forgot to acknowledge the $370 donation that Sgt at Arms Bruno Takacs collected when he passed the hat at the June meeting.  We also received another $300 in donations to finally cover all the shipping costs thanks to George Stettler’s resourcefulness.

NEW MEMBERS
Reminder, each new member should have a current Chapter member as a sponsor. The sponsor should screen the prospect to be sure that he has served and has an honorable discharge. Those that have served in the 1st Marine Division or in direct support should be encouraged to also join the national association. Their dues are only $30 annually.

We also need for the sponsoring member to help indoctrinate the new one with what the chapter is all about including their financial support for our activities, chapter shirts, name badges, caps, name badges, meeting dates and our website.
